Historically, small business owners have not been aware of their obligation to list their business personal property for taxation. When the Department of Tax Administration locates these owners, they are assessed for the current year and potentially up to five previous years’ tax, along with penalties. This can place a major burden on any business, but specifically on smaller entities. It is the Department's goal to reach these businesses when they first get started, so they don’t have to face these high tax bills.
